In December , Neil Diamond released his celebrated double-live album Hot August Night , recorded at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, and over the years he's put out four other live albums that could be considered sequels. They'll be available on standard black vinyl and limited-edition colored vinyl; this will mark the first time that the two most recent albums will be available on vinyl.

Hot August Night was recorded in August during a show run at the Greek. It reached 5 on the Billboard chart and has sold more than 2 million copies in the U. Lily Wright. Versatile record cabinet with a sturdy base and a small compact design ideal for small apartments. The unit comes with two closed-door cabinets on both sides and two extra drawers at the top. Capable of holding up to records, it has all been finished by hand to really emphasize the grain and design of the wood itself.

Vintage style record cabinet offering up to 16 drawers, enough to accommodate your entire collection. The piece has a natural walnut finish and four slightly curved legs. It is also accented with gorgeous brass pulls and offers a big countertop for your vinyl player and other pieces of your entertainment ensemble.

Her comedy was entirely character driven, and was a big influence on my improv and sketch work. Then I brought all that with me to Stand-Up. It contained excerpts from her Broadway show where she combined new sketches for her greatest SNL characters with some moments of Gilda being Gilda.

This album inspired a generation of female performers, and raised the bar for sketch performers. Andy Griffith took clean, rambling anecdotal stories and weaved them into a symphony of comedy. One note, the original LP contains more tracks than the CD re-release. Arguably the best in the business right now, Chris stands alone as a comic who puts Stand-Up first.

Mixing sketches and funny songs onto a dick that contained brutally funny stand-up, Bigger and Blacker served to paint a portrait of a comic emerging into a full blown artist. At the height of his popularity, Dice stepped onto the stage at Madison Square Garden and drove his devoted fans crazy with his brand of comedy.

Although time and popular tastes have maligned his contributions to comedy, Dice Rules stands as an important comedy album because it is one of the few that shows just how far the dream can go.

Brenner is the first observational comic, and this record shows him at his very best. Having listened to it again just recently, I was surprised by how timeless and funny these bits are.

Every line is strung together without a bit of fat, and each punch sends the audience into fits of laughter. I was fortunate enough to contact Mr. We knew all of their stuff by heart.

This eclectic group of performers took the lessons they learned from listening to radio greats like Stan Freberg, and combined it with a politically charged counter-culture sensibility, and the result is a collection of comedy that has become as much of a campus mainstay as the homecoming game, or the student center. This, their debut album, recorded in , retraces American history from the Native American perspective, and side 2 has a trippy 20 minute jaunt that starts with a language lesson, and winds up as an excursion through an imaginary Eastern European country.

This album is best listened to with a thesaurus in one hand, and your favorite mind altering substance in the other. Not so many traditional jokes per se, just great character comedy.

Both albums show how creative comedy can be. The Wonderful World of Jonathan Winters was first released in , and showcased Jonathan doing something that had never been done in comedy before; he played an entire cast of characters by himself.

Most of his pieces were actually carefully constructed sketches that showcased all those wonderful voices in his head. Side two the late show. This album contained only a hint of the comedian who would one day be the first African American to have the number 1 show in the country.

The comedy was aimed at a younger audience, and did it ever hit its mark. These 5 recordings contain valuable lessons for comedians; you might want to check them out. Although each topic is filled with nuggets of wisdom for aspiring comics and comedy writers, the stand out track is the one on stage personas.

Woody clarifies the process of becoming a character perhaps better than anybody that came before him. You should get them all. This box set containes all the Warner Brothers releases fro Pryor. In particular his take on Joke Construction is priceless. Fields to Robin Williams, this 4 CD box set has it all.

Listening to these performers, side by side, allows you to break down the construction and study the stiles. It is a veritable university for a comedian. Only a handful of comics ever commanded the stage with as much authority, personality, and charisma as Sam Kinison.

Every bit was an assault on what the audience held sacred. Louder Than Hell was the place where we first got to experience it. It shows Sam at his unyielding best. The cost of dying young is that more people remember the fame then remember the work.

One listen to Looking Good will show you why Freddie was arguably the hottest rising comedy star in the world when he committed suicide in He was 22 at the time. His legacy was huge considering the short time he was with us. Looking Good highlights the world Freddie grew up in, and gives us all a glimpse of the person behind the star.

The silly side allowed them to soften their political bite, and gave their material a sort of stealth intelligence. It showcased the fresh, breezy style that would later become the centerpiece of their CBS show. What it does have is the best comedy timing, and perfectly polarized comedic personas. This album shows what made Tom and Dick so wonderful, they had fun.

This album serves as his finest moment, weaving stories at a breakneck pace, while still infusing them with every bit of the lovable neurotic energy that he had inside.

The 11 songs and the jokes in between them are full of the type of biting wit that borders on subversive. Listening to it now, it seems as timeless and fresh as it did back in He was fully entrenched in the mainstream, and his Vegas shows were legendary. Uncensored was a throwback to the earlier Redd Foxx efforts. Recorded in front of a largely African American audience, Foxx held onto the brash style of his earlier albums, but presented material that had wisdom behind it.

Flip was my star gate into the world of stand-up. Flip Wilson was one of those performers. Falling miraculously somewhere right smack-dab in the middle of blues, rock, jazz, and cinema, the album feels progressive even today, more than a half-century after it was released. And that kind of nuance is best enjoyed by way of vinyl and multiple listening parties.

Call me nuts, but I think this record will go down in some form of Hall of Fame, decades from now. Just set the needle to play and enjoy every single layer of this instant pop classic. Atmospheric music plays oh so well through vinyl. Everything sounds better on vinyl. But, to nitpick, one could easily argue that the richer and more resonant genres of music sound better in this fuller, more robust sonic format.

Great classical, jazz, and experimental recordings do especially well here. That, and one-off pressings or foreign versions of iconic albums. Another thing to consider is the label itself.

Oftentimes, an act will release an EP or LP through a handful of labels or sometimes sub-labels of the overarching label. Some of these labels are long gone and therefore have accrued a sort of nostalgic value. Much like a Michael Jordan rookie card, the first release of now larger-than-life bands can be worth thousands, if not tens of thousands.

In short, yes. However, given the popularity of the field and the mass-production at play again these days, the value is not the same across the board. If you do plan to collect and maintain or even increase the value of your finds, proper storage is key.

Like wine, vinyl records need the right environment. Room temperature and reasonable humidity will keep your treasured musical discs from warping. In other words, treat them well and invest in a proper brush and storage setup. Ballad of the Dying Man Side B 5. Birdie 6. Leaving LA. Side C 7. A Bigger Paper Bag 8.
