After being unavailable for home media purchase for a significant time, the film received a second release, and was added to the esteemed Criterion Collection DVD series. It was the th film to enter the series, and was released on August 25, , in a restored version that was approved by director Stillman. A liner essay by novelist David Schickler was also included as a paper insert in the package.

The cover of the DVD features an illustration by French artist Pierre Le-Tan, [24] depicting actresses Beckinsale and Sevigny preparing themselves in the powder room before entering the disco; the painting is a replication of a scene in the film. After producer Theodore T. Life heard the year-old belting songs out in the toilets, she was signed on the spot.

A production pioneer and early adopter of synths with a talent for bringing a sharp electronic edge to an elaborate soul band sound, the duo complimented each other perfectly. The hurt in my voice is real. The song became a sort-of letter written by Candi Staton, giving advice to young listeners, and telling them to run from manipulators and abusers.

We never set out to make a disco record. It was about doing what felt right musically, then Candi did one heck of a vocal. It would remind you why you got into music. Levan later became resident DJ at Paradise Garage — a club modelled closely on aspects of The Loft — and after staking his claim as one of the most sought-after DJs of the city, Levan started branching out into production.

Built on a synthesised piano hook and sharp, snappy handclaps keyboardist Michael de Benedictus claimed that his group was the first to use a drum machine for this purpose.

Kate Beckinsale, who was living in England at the time, mailed an audition tape to Stillman; he was immediately mesmerized and cast her in the role of Charlotte.

The leading role of Alice Kinnon took the longest to cast—it originally was going to go to an unnamed European actress, but according to Stillman, she resembled co-star Kate Beckinsale "too much" and also had a non-American accent that caused complications. The call was placed by studio executives on a Monday. Two days after the phone call was placed to Ryder's agent, Sevigny, who had been given the script through her agent, auditioned for the role, and won it.

By the time Ryder's agent returned the call, Sevigny had already been cast. The filmmakers had to share the location with another film production that took place there beforehand.

The other production paid for the red carpeting used in the building, and the rest of the interior was designed and paid for by Stillman's crew.

The film also deals with the dynamics of friendships; the relationship between the two main characters, Charlotte and Alice, is an odd one. The two are polar opposites in personality, with Charlotte taking a dominant role as the timid Alice politely questions her constant advice and personal criticism. Their friendship is uncertain: Alice questions whether the two "even like each other". Theodore Life. Cheryl Lynn. Harold Melvin. Albert Sterling Menendez. Keyboards, Organ Hammond.

The Last Days of Disco is about family, music, small-time gangsters and the fear of being sent to the Falklands by the biggest gangster of them all. Witty, energetic and entirely authentic, it's also heartbreakingly honest, weaving together tragedy and comedy with an uncanny and unsettling elegance.

The best disco songs ever were largely produced by Giorgio Moroder, so it's only fitting for the Italian legend to be the one to pick them. Billboard Dance reached out to disco's greatest producer.
